The birthday boy – Adoption Star Del Boy

Redwings Horse Sanctuary welcomed Love Island’s Jonny Mitchell to the charity’s Ada Cole visitor centre in Essex.

On the same day that the ITV2 programme won the Best Reality award at the 2018 television BAFTAs, former star Jonny Mitchell was joining in the festivities at rescue donkey Del Boy’s 16th birthday party at Redwings Ada Cole in Nazeing.

As part of their popular sponsorship scheme, Redwings throws each of its “Adoption Star” donkeys and horses a special party to celebrate their birthdays. Visitors, supporters, adopters and, in this case, celebrities are invited to meet the Adoption Star, join in the celebrations and learn more about Redwings’ valuable work in rescuing and caring for horses and donkeys in need.

Joined by girlfriend Danielle Zarb-Cousin, Jonny also donned his hat and boots to help the team with grooming residents before enjoying a special tour of the centre to meet some of the almost 90 other rescued horses and donkeys.

Jonny and Danielle meet Adoption Star Zippy

Commenting on Jonny and Danielle’s visit, Redwings’ Head of Fundraising Alison Lanchester said: “Jonny approached Redwings looking to lend a helping hand to a charity based in his home county, and we were delighted for him and Danielle to become members of our team for the day.

“Jonny and Danielle are both animal lovers, and were great at getting stuck in! Del Boy’s party also attracted record crowds this year, so the extra hands were a fantastic help too.”

Supporters can sponsor Del Boy or any of Redwings’ 23 Adoption Star horses, ponies and donkeys for just £15 a year. The Redwings’ Adoption Scheme is a wonderful way to support the 100% publicly funded charity’s vital work and to make a new friend! Plus, not only are supporters able to visit their Adoption Star for free at one of Redwings five visitor centres, but they’re also invited to celebrate their birthday at a special party each year.

Redwings Ada Cole is located on Epping Road, Roydon, Nazeing, Essex EN9 2DH. Entry and parking are free of charge.
